Crazy Scene in Columbus: Tom Wilson Fights Goalie Elvis Merzlikins

Published December 22, 2023 at 2:39 PM

An entirely unusual scene occurred in the game between the Columbus Blue Jackets and the Washington Capitals last night. Indeed, with just over two minutes left in overtime, Latvian goalie Elvis Merzlikins engaged in a fight with the Capitals' tough guy, Tom Wilson.

It's quite remarkable that the 29-year-old goaltender didn't back down, taking on one of the best fighters in the NHL!

However, this move resulted in a penalty for the Blue Jackets' goaltender, allowing Washington to set up their power play. This action ultimately proved costly as Alexander Ovechkin sealed the game moments later with a blistering shot.

Blue Jackets' head coach, Pascal Vincent, was particularly furious with his goalie, mentioning that he clearly lacked judgment on this action. He was visibly unhappy with how things turned out, almost blaming the loss on his own goaltender.

"Wilson's job is to get in the faces of the opponents, the goalie, and to create a lot of emotion. There was plenty of that, and he did what he needed to do... and we reacted. It cost us the game. He does that against every team, every night. That's his job and he's one of the best at it. We know this. So, Merzlikins needs to control his emotions. If that hadn't happened, we would have had a three-on-two break... At that moment, we need to do better. It's unacceptable." - Pascal Vincent

It's likely that the goaltender will be much calmer in the upcoming games!
