The selection of David Reinbacher by the Montreal Canadiens has stirred significant controversy in the Montreal media, particularly because the forward Matvei Michkov was still available when Kent Hughes decided to pick the Austrian defender.

Despite being perceived as the second most talented prospect of the 2023 draft, Michkov's situation involving geopolitical issues in Russia, his contract with SKA Saint Petersburg, and his questionable attitude scared many teams, causing him to drop to the seventh pick.

However, the newly appointed general manager of the Philadelphia Flyers, Daniel Brière, couldn't pass up the opportunity to acquire a forward with generational talent.

New information about Matvei Michkov's future in the KHL has surfaced, suggesting that the Montreal Canadiens may have made a huge mistake by passing him over in the draft. According to Daniel Brière, the 19-year-old forward is currently doing everything in his power to terminate his current contract to make the move to the Bettman league soon.

"Brière stated that Matvei Michkov should find a way to get out of his contract so he can come here within two years." - Jon Bailey

Wow! The fact that one of the reasons the Canadiens didn't draft the forward was precisely because of his contract in the KHL. If Matvei Michkov manages to leave Russia and arrives in Philadelphia at the start of the next training camp, the organization might certainly regret their choice.

After all, we know how much Martin St-Louis's team needs forwards who can contribute offensively, and adding a player as skilled around the opponent's net would certainly have helped the team's top two lines. He could have potentially formed a formidable duo with Kirby Dach on the second unit.

Under contract in the KHL until 2026, Matvei Michkov spent the last season with HC Sochi, where he amassed an impressive total of 19 goals and 22 assists (41 points) in 47 games.

It will be very interesting to see when the Russian prospect will finally be able to make his debut in North America. Let's bet that at that time, the famous debate about the Canadiens' fifth pick will heat up again. If Matvei Michkov progresses and becomes the 40 to 50-goal scorer many anticipate, many fans will certainly view the selection of David Reinbacher as a serious mistake.
