Now that the trade deadline is behind us, the Montreal Canadiens are now focusing on what's coming next: the draft.

Kent Hughes has several important files to assess in the days leading up to the annual auction, in order to properly identify his needs for a successful draft, which means top offensive talent, but also, to look at options for making a big splash in the trade market again.
Kent Hughes has officially confirmed what everyone was expecting
The general manager of the Canadiens has also confirmed something that was highly anticipated by the team's fans by mentioning his intention to make another big splash, as he did with Kirby Dach and Alex Newhook in previous years, if the opportunity arose.
More clearly, he stated that he wanted to be a "buyer" during the draft period, in order to add another piece to the puzzle for the Tricolore's lineup.
"I suppose we have been buyers to some extent at the drafts and sellers at the trade deadline. If the opportunity arises again at the draft, we will look to continue on this path." - Kent Hughes

This means that the CH management will carefully study what might be available, with the aim of adding a young player who fits with their core.
Some information has been confirmed that the Canadiens inquired about Trevor Zegras from the Anaheim Ducks. Whether it's him, or a Martin Necas in Carolina or another, the summer of 2024 could be very exciting for the fans.
What is also very interesting to hear is that Hughes still considers acting as a seller at the next trade deadline, which opens the door to acquiring other assets for the rebuild.
Remember that next year, Joel Armia, Christian Dvorak, Jake Evans, Michael Pezzetta, David Savard, and Johnathan Kovacevic will all become unrestricted free agents.
Among this group, there should not be anyone who would receive a contract extension from the Canadiens, which means they will become trade elements at the end of the season.
