MAJOR: Standout 23-Year-Old Forward Officially Linked to the Canadiens and Kent Hughes Has an Incredible Opportunity
During his appearance on TSN 690 yesterday morning, David Pagnotta disclosed very important information regarding Kent Hughes and the trade market.
According to his sources, the General Manager of the Montreal Canadiens has started discussions with several teams to complete a trade involving a young impact player.
In the last few hours, the insider reiterated, linking the Canadiens to a very promising forward from the Detroit Red Wings. He also revealed that Kent Hughes had contacted his counterpart, Steve Yzerman, to acquire the 33rd overall pick in 2018, Jonatan Berggren.
"As I reported on Sunday, and reiterated Tuesday on NHL Network, the Detroit Red Wings have had conversations with several teams about young forward Jonatan Berggren, who is back with the big club thanks to an emergency loan and who has collected two points in two games.
Two separate sources have confirmed that the Wings have had discussions about the 23-year-old player in recent weeks and that Berggren and his camp are aware that a trade is possible. The Montreal Canadiens are indeed one of the interested teams." - David Pagnotta
Interesting! He could certainly be an excellent addition to energize Martin St-Louis's attack.
At only 23 years old, the Swedish forward has had only one opportunity to prove himself in the NHL, which was last year. Although he encountered some difficulties, he performed quite well, accumulating a total of 28 points in 67 games.
Additionally, he has clearly demonstrated that he was too dominant to play in the American League, amassing 30 goals and 56 assists (86 points) in 93 games over his three seasons with the Grand Rapids Griffins in the AHL.
Jonatan Berggren's statistics over the last three seasons:
· 2021-2022: 21 goals and 43 assists (64 points) in 70 games with the Grand Rapids Griffins, in the AHL
· 2022-2023: 15 goals and 13 assists (28 points) in 67 games with the Detroit Red Wings in the NHL, and 4 goals and 3 assists (7 points) in 7 games with the Grand Rapids Griffins in the AHL
· 2023-2024: 2 goals and 1 assist (3 points) in 6 games with the Detroit Red Wings, and 5 goals and 10 assists (15 points) in 16 games with the Grand Rapids Griffins, in the AHL
There is no doubt that a change of scenery would be beneficial for him, as he could potentially flourish and reach his full potential with another team in the NHL, like the Montreal Canadiens.
Moreover, he represents exactly the type of player that Kent Hughes and Jeff Gorton want to acquire: a young player with immense talent who needs a second opportunity to develop to the fullest.
