Kent Hughes and the Montreal Canadiens haven't been very active in the free agent market since the new management structure arrived in the organization.

This approach could somewhat change if we rely on what Pierre LeBrun mentioned in his latest article on "The Athletic."
The Habs might therefore be tempted to sign enticing veteran players in the free agent market, but with an established strategy. Paying the players, but with a short-term contract.
One quickly thinks of forwards like Steven Stamkos, Jake Guentzel, or even Jonathan Marchessault.
To avoid being stuck with agreements for players aged 35, 36 and older, Kent Hughes will have to sign young players from the organization.
"It's also a plan that the Canadiens are considering internally, I believe: signing free agents who meet short-term needs.''
- Pierre LeBrun
